Vonco adds specialty medical capabilities with Genesis acquisition

Trevor, Wis.-based Vonco Products LLC acquired Fortville, Ind.-based contract manufacturer Genesis Plastics Welding to add capabilities and expand its offering of medical bags for bioprocessing, cell separation and culture, cryogenic storage and blood.

Founded in 1987, Genesis is an ISO 13485-certified thermoplastics processor that uses proprietary technology called ecoGenesis to weld very thin gauge polyethylene, polypropylene and other materials that can replace PVC for medical and consumer products.

Genesis brings Vonco capabilities for radio frequency (RF) welding and heat-sealing as well as two clean rooms to manufacture products, such as surgical instrument covers, oxygenated respiratory hoods and temperature-management devices, in addition to fluid bags.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

This is the third acquisition for Vonco in as many years to broaden the scope of services and product lines.

Founded in 1955, Vonco manufactures liquid-tight medical fluid devices and stand-up pouches with spouts for health and hygiene products. The company specializes in unique shapes, fitment insertions, assembly of unsupported or laminated films and medical-grade sterile barrier pouches.

The Genesis acquisition will support Vonco customers needing specialty medical devices, fluid bags, flexible packaging, contract packaging and sterilization management, according to Vonco CEO Keith Smith.

"The addition will expand our plastic contract manufacturing capabilities within our current line of infection prevention, medical fluid bags and specimen transport products. Genesis Plastics Welding clients can expect to receive even greater quality, support, service and innovation as both teams integrate," Smith said in a news release.

The company's other recent acquisitions include Batavia, Ill.-based Flex-Pak Packaging Products Inc. in January 2022 and Geneva, Ill.-based McFarlane Medical Inc. in August 2020.

Flex-Pak brought contract manufacturing capabilities for flexible barrier packaging and sterile barrier pouches while McFarlane is a contract manufacturer of Class I and Class II medical devices that can handle specialized assembly and packaging.
