Close survey Paper-based packaging company Smurfit Kappa has partnered with Mitsubishi HiTec Paper to develop recyclable board-based food packaging.The new product development is part of Smurfit Kappa’s Better Planet Packaging initiative.The new board-based packaging is a combination of Smurfit Kappa’s MB12 packaging technology and Mitsubishi HiTec Paper’s BARRICOTE barrier paper product.Mitsubishi HiTec Paper new business development and corporate social responsibility (CSR) director Dr Dieter Becker said: “As experts in speciality paper coatings, we brought our know-how in barrier and protective coatings to this process. “Our solutions are completely free from foil, laminates, aluminium and fluorocarbons. Instead, we rely on the highest possible percentage of biodegradable resources, which is why Smurfit Kappa’s MB12 solution was the right one.”
In May 2018, Smurfit Kappa developed food-safe MB12 packaging.MB12 technology prevents mineral oil from entering into packaged food.Renewable raw material content in the barrier makes the new packaging solution recyclable.Smurfit Kappa paper division product development vice-president Lars Henriksson said: “It has been a very interesting and collaborative process for us working with Mitsubishi HiTec Paper on this project.“The fibres that our industry-leading paper is made from are an excellent solution for a huge ranges of products due to a range of attributes, not least their inherent sustainability.”Swiss chocolate product producer HOBAKO and Swiss packaging supplier SCHELLING have also used the board-based packaging.
